Fix Gnome remote access under Ubuntu

When you are trying to troubleshoot the desktop of a family member or friend is not the right time to run into problems on how to actually control their machines remotely.
Ubuntu comes with Remote Desktop, a control panel that essentially runs a VNC server (vino-server) so you can connect to the user and make changes while they watch you.

It just so happen that if the user has Visual Effects turn on, their screen does not refresh over the network as it should. And the reason is because of something called xdamage. The solution is simple, turn off xdamage for remote access:

gconftool-2 --set /desktop/gnome/remote_access/disable_xdamage --type bool true

And voilá! Now your screen (remotely) will refresh correctly.

To verify your settings you can do:

gconftool-2 --get /desktop/gnome/remote_access/disable_xdamagetrue

Ready for some boxing: Manny vs Antonio

Pacquiao vs Margarito

This is going to be a clash of the titans tonight on HBO @9PM EST.

My bet is of course on Pacquiao ;-)

Major DDoS on Register.com

As of this writing, Register.com is going through a major DDoS attack that is disrupting services for all the websites for which they host DNS services for.

This is a really bad problem for small players like Kiskeyix.org who can't afford to run their own DNS servers.

This is not the first time this happens and certainly won't be the last. Perhaps is time to move to a vendor with a better record, something other than GoDaddy.com? Or perhaps one should always run their own DNS servers!
